There is something very bold about having a drink before midday - It becomes exciting and daring because you know that really and truly you shouldn't!
If you are going to fix yourself a tipple before the sun is high in the sky, then there is no better one to go for than a Bloody Mary - Especially if you are going to make fresh tomato juice from your sweet, plump CSA haul.
I make my Bloody Mary using a very Spicy Bitters blend I created along with a Spicy Vodka that I made two years ago. You can of course make yours the traditional way with regular vodka and cayenne and tabasco in place of the Bitters.
The key here are the tomato's - Do try to make your own juice from tasty seasonal tomatoes, from a farmers market or local producer. Don't bother if you're going to buy watery, no flavour supermarket bought ones, that have travelled half way around the world on an aeroplane before hitting your shop shelf.
You will need:
- 50ml Vodka
- 100ml Fresh Tomato Juice (blend approx 15 small sweet tomatoes, you can keep the skin on as the juice will be strained)
- 1 Lemon wedge
- 1 Lime wedge
- 4 dashes of spicy bitters or tabasco
- 4 dashes Worcestershire Sauce
- 1 pinch of Smoked Paprika
- Sea Salt Flakes (I use Achill Island sea salt), Lime Wedge and Celery Stalk to garnish.
Pour salt flakes on to a small plate. Rub the juice of your lime wedge along the lip of a Slim Jim / tall glass.
Roll the outer rim of the glass into the salt flakes, so that it is coated. Add ice and set your glass to one side.
Place all of the other ingredients into a shaker with ice, squeezing the remaining lime juice and lemon juice wedge, before putting them in.
Shake gently or stir. Strain into your prepared glass and garnish with lime wedge and celery stalk (or whatever is to your liking).
