A tasty cocktail to celebrate the day that is in it - Happy St. Patrick's Day!
A little different to some of the more 'traditional' Irish drinks - Here is an Irish take on the Maragrita, prepared using the very Irish ingredient: Shamrock.
S H A M R O C K /// S H A M R Ó G
As well as a lot of people 'drowning' the shamrock and pinning it to their lapels today - St Patricks Day.
The shamrock was also and can be used for its medicinal properties, It is part of the Oxalis and Woodsorrel family,
The juice of the leaves turn red when clarified and can make a fine syrup.
Shamrock was thought to have been a sacred plant to the Druids because of its 3 leaves - The number 3 was a mystical number. St. Patrick used it to illustrate the holy Trinity
It doesn't have a scent but does have an acidity due to the presence of a special salt - Binoxalate of potash - Making it great for a Shamrock Margarita!
You will need:
- 35ml Tequila
- 30ml Triple Sec / Cointreau
- 15ml Fresh Lime Juice
- Dash of Nettle Syrup
- Freshly plucked Shamrock*
Crush your salt and shamrock together in a pestle and mortar - Turn out on to a plate for the salt rim
Rub the rim of your glass in lime juice and coat with the shamrock salt.
Mix all your ingredients (apart from the salt and shamrock) in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake until cooled and strain into your salt rimmed glass.
Enjoy a toast to Shamrock and St.Patrick.
